Below are a list of procedures and encounters that are common place in the emergency department. Take record of your procedures and encounters while you are here.  Listed next to each procedure are the numbers you should complete by the end of your rotation

  • Suture and Laceration Repair (3)

  • Intubation, Chest tube, and Central Line (view and help)

  • Ultrasound Guided IV (3 attempts)

  • Ultrasound: (Review EM-US Website for pointers)

    •  E-FAST (2)

    • RUSH exam, Cardiac 4 views (2)

    • Bladder Measurements (2)

    • Lung Exam: Pleural Fluid, Lung Sliding, and B-lines  (2)

  • Basic Splinting

    • Upper Extremity (1)

    • Lower Extremity (1)

  • Hip reduction or Shoulder reduction (1)

  • Abscess I&D (1)

  • Full eye exam including fluorescein and ocular pressure (2)

Below are a list of common presentations or “chief complaints” seen in the ED. Make an effort to see at least 1 of each type of presentation.

  • Headache

  • Dental Pain

  • Sore Throat

  • Dizziness

  • Chest pain

  • A-fib

  • Syncope

  • Shortness of Breath

  • Abdominal Pain

  • Back pain

  • Fall from standing

  • Fracture or dislocation
