Welcome to Maria Parham ED.

We are excited to have you start with us!  During your first few shadow shifts, regardless of your previous education or title, I’d like to follow a relatively standard format.

**Disclaimer: if at any point you walk into a room and your patient appears sick get your mentor immediately. Safety and caution is our number one priority.

First two shifts with each mentor:

During your first two shifts with any mentor, you will follow a “see one, present one” model.  You can go see a patient but need to come straight back and present the patient in a standard fashion to your mentor. This will allow them to give you timely and direct feedback. After you present, your mentor may either have you write the note for their review and suggestions or will write the note themselves.

They may have you order the labs and imaging or may do it themselves while discussing the plan with you.

All Subsequent shifts:

For any student:

During any subsequent shifts you have with each mentor you will continue to follow the above format: "see one present one"

For any resident or graduated PA:

During any subsequent shifts you have with each mentor they will either request you continue to follow the above "see one present one" model, or may have you step into a more advanced role of independently starting your own work ups.

Regardless of your role it is imperative that you touch base with your mentor about any patient before admitting or discharging them.

Other General expectations:
It will be greatly beneficial toward your learning to take ownership of your patients throughout their time in the ED. The initial evaluation, communication with nurses, repeat evaluations, and patient updates are all very important parts of good patient care, and although we will be your back up and support, we will be looking to you to carry out a large portion of the above. Let us know how your patients are doing throughout their time here.

If at any point you want to break away to see a procedure, do an Ultrasound, or be involved in another patient's care just ask your mentor. Any time you feel a learning opportunity can be had take it!

We hope this rotation gives you a huge leg up and gives you the confidence, education, and exposure needed to succeed moving forward!
