MPH ED Introduction
We are excited to have you on campus and look forward to working shifts with you. We are a community ED, much smaller than most Tertiary Centers. We are staffed by 1 EM physician at any given time with 3 APP overlapping shifts.
Students: You will be the only student in the emergency department, and will be assigned a preceptor for each shift. While you are formally assigned to that preceptor, you should feel welcome to see other interesting patients that are not assigned to your preceptor. Being the only learner will allow you to see any and all patients in the emergency department. Please be assertive. Tell your preceptor which patients you want to see. Communicate your weaknesses and strengths with your preceptor so we can give you the best rotation possible.
Residents: You will be the only resident in the emergency department and will be assigned an attending for each shift. Being the only resident will allow you to work closely with your attending. It is expected that you will sign up for your own patients (8-14 in a 12-hour shift), present the patient to your attending in real time, write each note, and follow up on their care and disposition. Communicate any interests, weaknesses, and strengths with your attending so we can give you the best rotation possible.
Parking: You are to park on the side of the ED, outside the ambulance doors. For each shift, you will enter through the ambulance bay doors. These doors are locked, and require a proximity badge. Be sure to lock your car, and remove all valuables.
Where to go on your first day: For your first day, you will have to knock on the glass ambulance doors to be let in. On your right will be the provider station where you will meet with your preceptor. After an ED tour, you will be taken to security to get a badge and proximity card.
Shifts: You will be expected to work a minimum of 14 shifts. They are all 12 hours, with the exception of an optional EMS and respiratory therapy shift. You will be notified of your schedule one week prior to starting. Please be flexible throughout your rotation as preceptors will sometimes have to switch schedules last minute.
Attire: Dress in scrubs or business casual. Most prefer to wear scrubs due to the potential to get your clothes dirty in the ED. You will be expected to wear your white coat to distinguish yourself as a student.
Food: Be sure to bring food each shift. There is a cafeteria, but it is only open limited hours.
Equipment: At minimum, you will need your stethoscope, white coat, pen/paper.
In ED Learning:
Although “book learning” is extremely important, there are some things best learned while in the ED. Please take a look at the “ED learning Opportunities” section before each shift to ensure you catch the chance to check these off your list. Many of our ED Physicians and APPs will be happy to guide you during these bedside experiences. (See “ED Learning Opportunities” for more information)
