**Disclaimer: if at any point you walk into a room and your patient appears sick get your attending immediately. Safety and caution are our number one priority.
First shift with each Attending:
During your first shift with any attending, you will follow a “see one, present one” model. You should sign up for and go see a patient but need to come straight back and present the patient in a standard fashion to your attending. This will allow them to give you timely and direct feedback. After you present, they will guide you through ordering labs, imaging, and medications, until you are comfortable with our EMR.
Next, your attending will have you write a note for their review and co-sign.
See one patient, present that patient, order workups, start your note before moving on to pick up another patient.
All Subsequent shifts:
During subsequent shifts with each attending they will expect you to step into a more advanced role. Feel free to independently sign-up for patients, start your own work ups, and present patients as you go. All patients need to be presented to your attending before disposition. Your attending may pull you aside to have you present when they are most free, this is normal.
Note Writing:
You will complete notes labeled “ED Resident Note Template.” Please make sure you select this note and add your attending as the co-signer.
Other General expectations:
It will be greatly beneficial toward your learning to take ownership of your patients throughout their time in the ED. The initial evaluation, communication with nurses, repeat evaluations, and patient updates are all very important parts of good patient care, and although we will be your back up and support, we will be looking to you to carry out a large portion of the above. Let us know how your patients are doing throughout their time here.
We hope this rotation gives you a huge leg up and gives you the confidence, education, and exposure needed to succeed moving forward!
